Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge Rehabilitation
Scope of Work
Cianbro replaced the deck on the 6,000 lf Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
Project Details
Diverted two-way traffic to one side of the bridge
Performed night work from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Employed a 7 ft rotary saw to cross-cut the deck into 46 ft by 12 ft sections
Removed deteriorated deck panels with a crane and lowered them to a barge below
Sandblasted and coated the exposed steel work
Installed 1,026, 46 ft by 12 ft precast, post-tensioned (longitudinally and traversely) concrete deck panels
“We should take notice here in Congress that someone, somewhere in the great bureaucracy had found a corporation that allows the construction of a bridge to be completed not only on schedule but ahead of schedule. I commend whoever it is who owns that corporation.”
Congressman Dan Mica - Congressional Record
Project Awards
Completing this project seven months ahead of schedule, Cianbro received the following recognition:
Engineering News Record (January 5, 1984) “Those Who Made Marks in 1983”
AGC’s Build America Award
AAA’s Commendation Award on the behalf of 135,000 daily users of the bridge
Unique Challenge
The Cianbro team successfully designed and fabricated steel grid, precast, concrete deck panels, which quadrupled the rate of deck replacement and allowed for the 6-lane, peak rush hour traffic during the day. Scaffolding was also used to prevent debris from contaminating the river and national parkland beneath the bridge. This allowed the area to remain open to the public throughout construction.
