In May, a large group of M.I.T. alumni traveled to the site of the picturesque Penobscot Narrows Bridge in Maine to hear Cianbro Project Manager Kaven Philbrook talk about the engineering magic that went into the span's design. Philbrook headed up the Joint Venture that built the bridge between 2003 and 2006. At the event sponsored by the M.I.T. Club of Maine, Philbrook joined fellow Project Manager Tom Doe of the Maine D.O.T. to describe the creation of the landmark bridge.

The organization is known as Jobs For Maine's Graduates, Inc., or JMG, and the program helps middle school and high school students to stay on the path toward a worthwhile education. Cianbro, which has supported the organization for years, has now added extra financial clout to JMG's mission. For every JMG graduate who hires on at Cianbro and stays with the company for six months to a year, Cianbro will donate funding to JMG.

Since April, Cianbro team members have been laying the groundwork for renovating the ferry terminals in Lincolnville and Islesboro, Maine, scheduled to take place during a month-long shutdown in early fall. The project is critical to islanders who rely on the ferry service for everything from emergency medical care to trips to the grocery store.

In 2006 Cianbro’s Wellness Program was honored by receiving the Platinum award, the highest award granted by The Wellness Council of America (WELCOA). On Tuesday evening, May 19, 2009, Cianbro was honored once again and recertified its Platinum status at the Well Workplace Awards Celebration Dinner. Until this year, Cianbro was the only Platinum award winner in the state and one of only thirteen nationally.

The steel erection crew has set the final girder for the W-S ramp Connector. Weighing in at over 55,000 pounds, the 87 foot girder completes the portion of the W-S Ramp that connects to the East Approach. Next up, the steel erection crew will begin preparation for the erection of the W-S ramp from the South abutment to Pier 5.

The Cianbro team members who create the work package instructions for building Motiva's refinery modules are entering their work in a special competition. The work package engineers at Brewer's Eastern Manufacturing Facility use 3-D software to visualize the construction of the modules. That software is called Bentley's ConstructSim. Now Bentley has invited Cianbro's team to submit their work for Bentley's Be Inspired Awards

The ocean going tug Emma Foss and her barge Columbia Boston are back in Maine waters after delivering the first Cianbro modules for the Motiva refinery expansion project in Texas. The vessels arrived in Searsport on Tuesday afternoon, May 5th, with plans to head up the Penobscot River to Brewer beginning at sunrise on Wednesday, arriving in Brewer at 8:45 a.m.
