In April of 2008, Cianbro Corporation and Joint Venture partner, Middlesex Corporation, were awarded a contract to begin the task of replacing the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge (aka "Q Bridge") in New Haven, Connecticut. Cianbro team members, led by Senior Project Manager Chet Muckenhirn, have made substantial progress in this important job for the company. Chet talks about the project: past, present, and future.

Cianbro Corporation is beginning a relatively small, but very visible project in downtown Bangor, Maine. The company is beginning the demolition of a crumbling parking garage on the site of the former City Hall building at the corner of Hammond and Columbia streets. The demolition is expected to take the remainder of July. Cianbro crews will then begin construction on a new parking garage, a 22,000 square foot, 83 space facility. Infrastructure work will be the focus of team members through August.

The ocean going tug, Emma Foss, and her empty barge, the Columbia Boston, are back in Brewer, Maine after an eleven day voyage from Texas. The vessels are back in Maine after delivering the second shipment of Cianbro-built refinery expansion modules to the seven billion dollar Motiva refinery upgrade in Port Arthur, Texas. Cianbro crews in Brewer are putting the final touches on five modules that will be loaded aboard the barge for voyage number three.

Islanders from throughout North Haven and Vinalhaven joined Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, Cianbro Chairman Peter Vigue, CEO George Baker of Fox Islands Wind, LLC, local dignitaries and several other VIPs at the groundbreaking of the new Fox Islands Wind power project. Cianbro's construction team shut down operations for a little less than an hour to give the guests of honor a chance to deliver short speeches, discussing the importance of the project to the stability of electricity supplies and prices on the islands, and to the future of the coastal wind power industry in Maine.

After months of negotiations, public outreach, permit applications and design work, Fox Islands Wind, LLC, is now overseeing the first construction phases of an effort to bring wind energy to Vinalhaven and North Haven, off the Maine coast. When work on site is completed later this year, three 1.5 megawatt General Electric wind turbines will be feeding electricity directly to the power distribution system on the two islands. The turbines are expected to stabilize power prices on the islands, a benefit that has won the overwhelming support of the islanders for the project. Any surplus power that is generated by the wind turbines will be sold back to the regional grid via the submarine cable that currently delivers electricity to the islands.

Four Cianbro refinery expansion modules are now safely in Port Arthur, Texas, after a voyage from Brewer, Maine, which lasted 11 days. Project Manager Scott Clements says the tug Emma Foss arrived with her barge-load of modules on Tuesday morning.

On June 19-21, Cianbro's Cycling Team pedaled 180 miles from Sunday River to Belfast, with overnight stops at UMaine Farmington and Colby College in Waterville during the 2009 Trek Across Maine. The event attracted more than 2,600 cyclists from around Maine and the nation. It was all to benefit the services provided by the American Lung Association, for which Cianbro's team raised more than $14,000.

The Connecticut Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors presented its highest safety award to Cianbro at a ceremony on June 10th. Cianbro attained S.T.E.P. (Safety Training and Evaluation Process) Platinum status, after a review of the company's safety training programs and safety record.

Vermont Electric Power Company, Inc. (VELCO) has chosen Cianbro to install 51 miles of brand new 345 kV transmission line in southern Vermont. "It's the largest project in the history of Cianbro's transmission and distribution efforts," said Cianbro's General Manager of T&D, Jon Sharp. The project will take place over a 10 to 11 month period, beginning at the end of July. Sharp says Cianbro will use the core group of the company's T&D crews which are currently working on the Kibby Mountain Wind Power project in western Maine, including subcontractors. The Kibby team will receive additional workforce and support from Cianbro's Southern New England Region.
