Cianbro CEO Peter Vigue was among the national, state, and local dignitaries who contributed glowing statements at this week's dedication of the brand new Fox Islands Wind turbines on Vinalhaven Island off the Maine coast. Maine Governor John Baldacci, U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree, Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree, and Harvard Business Professor and FIW visionary George Baker were among the speakers who joined Vigue at the podium beneath Turbine #2. The project is being hailed up and down the eastern seaboard as a model for energy independence, stabilized power supplies and affordable utility prices, while also contributing to a cleaner environment.

Fox Islands Wind: Largest New England Coastal Wind Project Begins Power Generation

Maine Governor John Baldacci joined Cianbro CEO Peter Vigue and the communities on the Fox Islands in a ceremony to dedicate the largest community-owned wind facility on the East Coast and the largest off-shore wind farm in New England. The Fox Islands Wind Project’s three large-scale wind turbines will generate 4.5 megawatts of electricity for the islands of Vinalhaven and North Haven, providing clean energy to the islands’ residents for decades to come.

The dedication marks the commencement of stabilized power supplies and lowered energy costs for the islands’ residents, who currently pay more than double the national average for their power.

Busy Week for Fox Islands Wind Project

A second shipment of wind turbine blades is scheduled to arrive in Rockland, Maine today. The four 123 foot blades are destined for Vinalhaven Island, where Cianbro is building three wind turbines for Fox Islands Wind, LLC. The first shipment of blades arrived safely Wednesday in Carver's Harbor on Vinalhaven. As islanders and bystanders watched and cheered, crews unloaded the two tractor-trailer loads of blades and sent them up to Cianbro's jobsite.

Fox Islands Wind Turbines Trucked Across Coastal Maine

The first four wind turbine blades, destined to stabilize the energy supply on Maine's Fox Islands, arrived in Rockland Tuesday after a smooth seven hour journey by truck. The four 123 foot blades departed Eastport in a two-truck convoy escorted by State Police cruisers. Cianbro Transportation Supervisor Nick Arena said, "We had no problems. We had a plan in place and plenty of preparation, and the plan worked well. It was an uneventful job, and I think that's what we want."

Cianbro to Build Wind Turbines for Fox Islands Wind Project

After months of negotiations, public outreach, permit applications and design work, Fox Islands Wind, LLC, is now overseeing the first construction phases of an effort to bring wind energy to Vinalhaven and North Haven, off the Maine coast. When work on site is completed later this year, three 1.5 megawatt General Electric wind turbines will be feeding electricity directly to the power distribution system on the two islands. The turbines are expected to stabilize power prices on the islands, a benefit that has won the overwhelming support of the islanders for the project. Any surplus power that is generated by the wind turbines will be sold back to the regional grid via the submarine cable that currently delivers electricity to the islands.
