Scope of Work
Cianbro constructed a new pier, a research lab and mechanical building to support oyster cultivation research to increase oyster spat production and distribution to improve restoration efforts for the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. With the new addition, the facility is anticipated to increase oyster restoration efforts significantly to one to two billion oyster spat-on-shell.

Project Details
  • Constructed a 70 ft wide x 300 ft long pier supported by concrete piles and steel pipe piles
  • Framed the pier with cast-in-place concrete caps
  • Installed 1 ft thick solid pre-cast slabs above the concrete caps, which are topped off with a 1 ft thick cast-in-place slab
  • Constructed a laboratory building on the pier
  • Constructed a mechanical building with equipment on the pier
  • Installed electrical conduits embedded in the topping slab
  • Removed pumps and replacing with two 2600 GPM pumps
  • Installed CPVC piping for ambient sea water, heated sea water, air bubblers, and potable water
  • Installed an underground potable water line, forced sewage main and fiber optic communication line
  • Installed timber fender system at end of pier

Unique Challenge

Special attention was required for preconstruction documentation and seismic monitoring on the project due to noise and work restrictions from 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday becaues of proximity of neighboring residents. Cianbro worked diligently to protect existing buried utilities and maintain existing on-site services and traffic during construction. The environmental elements included significant snow fall and ice during a tumultuous winter, high tides, and 90+ degree heat and during the summer months.
