Scope of Work
Cianbro widened and rehabilitated an operating, 1,040 lf pier at a pipeline oil tanker terminal.

Project Details
Phase I—Understructure Repair
  • Water blasted 213 pipe pile and applied an epoxy coating system
  • Performed concrete demolition with an ultra high pressure water blaster
  • Repaired concrete on a 300-ft by 40-ft loading platform
  • Repaired 15 concrete pier caps
Phase II—Pier Widening and Upgrade
  • Widened the pier from 40 ft to 60 ft wide 
  • Placed both precast and cast-in-place concrete at pier caps
  • Drove 110 new 24-inch-diameter steel pipe piles—up to 150 lf
  • Demolished existing and installed a new rubber fender system
  • Employed a temporary fender system, which allowed the client to berth vessels during construction
  • Removed four and installed six 16 inch hydraulic unloading arms
  • Replaced existing ladders, handrails, and toe rails
  • Demolished existing and installed new line handling and mooring equipment
  • Rehabilitated the fire suppression and electrical systems
  

Unique Challenge



The Cianbro team worked with the owner and engineer to develop a design and construction schedule to maintain continuous operation of the facility. They implemented a detailed “hot work” plan to allow highly combustible crude oil to be offloaded at the pier during construction.
