Scope of Work
Cianbro was responsible for the heavy civil portion of the Groton Wind Farm project including construction of 12 miles of roadways, 24 rock bolted wind turbine foundations, the underground collection system, medium voltage terminations, and an O&M Pre-Engineered Building.

Project Details
  • Provided extensive coordination between road building, foundations, collection system, and tower erection on four separate mountain ridges, which was the key to a successful project start-up
  • Performed several miles of extensive erosion controls adjacent to a “stream of significance to the cold water fisheries”
  • Performed site security and traffic coordination for all sitework, foundation, collections, and erection activities
  • Constructed rock bolted foundations requiring water testing and consolidation grouting for 432 rock anchors
  • Placed 3,000 cy of high strength concrete for the foundations, all of which reached design strength in 3 days
  • Self-performed the Underground Electrical Collection System
  • Installed 45,000 lf of medium voltage cable
  • Performed 150 each medium voltage terminations
  • Subcontracted the sitework and pre-engineered O&M Building

Unique Challenge

Cianbro performed mountainous road work and sitework, totaling over 500,000 cy of blasted granite bedrock, on top of four mountain ridges during the winter months as a result of a compressed schedule; this allowed the foundation construction to remain on-schedule. Additionally, Cianbro maintained local roadway and neighborhood relationships on a narrow rural residential road, the only artery into the project.
