Scope of Work
The Cianbro/Middlesex Joint Venture Team is constructing a new bascule bridge over the Taunton River, which will span over 1,000 ft and have 60 ft of clearance over the river. The bridges clearance will allow marine traffic to pass underneath the bascule while in the down position, in a 200 ft shipping channel. Construction includes associated piers and abutments, as well as an overpass for Interstate 79.

Project Details
The Cianbro/Middlesex Team:
  • Installing erosion, siltation and dust control devices
  • Performing utility work maintenance
  • Performing structural and cofferdam excavation
  • Constructing and placing reinforced concrete piers and abutments
  • Constructing retaining walls along Interstate 70 and installing MSE walls near the abutments and along roadways
  • Placing concrete bridge decks, bridge railings and joints
  • Constructing bridges over the roadways
  • Erecting a four leaf bascule span
  • Erecting steel tub girders for the East and West approaches
  • Building a control house for the bascule
  • Installing electrical and mechanical equipment, including drive motors, brakes, span locks, warning gates, and lights, as well as heating/ventilation systems and associated plumbing
  • Managing vehicle traffic on Interstate 79, which passes underneath the bridge construction
  • Installing architectural finishes
  • Constructing roadways, ramps, walkways, signs, traffic signals, street lighting, pavement markings, and finish landscaping
"The project is the largest Massachusetts Highway project in the state – more than $300 million dollars from start to finish.”

Unique Challenge

As the final contract to complete the Brightman Street Bridge Projects, the majority of the sub-structure was already completed, forcing the approach superstructure steel, bascule span steel, mechanical equipment submittals, and approvals to be on a tightly-scheduled critical path. Constructing the ramps to the bridge, along Interstate 79, has required precision planning for safety and efficiency throughout construction.
