Scope of Work
Cianbro was selected to perform the rehabilitation of the North Grand Island Bridges located on Interstate 190 of the New York State Thruway over the Niagara River. The two bridges, southbound and northbound, are each 4025 feet long and consist of eleven truss spans and five girder spans.

Project Details
  • Performing miscellaneous steel and sub-structure repairs
  • Replacing sidewalk and curb on northbound bridge
  • Replacing southbound bridge deck, deck overlay and sidewalk
  • Replacing bridge bearings
  • Installing LED lane designation signals, navigation and lighting
  • Modifying sign structures
  • Reconstructing approaching roadway and pier sealing

Unique Challenge

The Cianbro Team will perform work over the Niagara River, two miles upstream of Niagara Falls, with substantial currents. Substructure work and steel repairs have to be done from the water and the bridge decking must be replaced during 8 hour nightly shut-downs to allow bridge opening for day time traffic. As the main connector between the City of Buffalo and Niagara Falls, the bridges experience an average daily traffic volume of 65,000 vehicles
