After ongoing cable inspection on the bridge by Maine Department of Transportation revealed deteriorating cables, Cianbro installed a Supplemental Cable System for the Waldo-Hancock Bridge.

Project Details
  • Installed anchorages for the supplemental cable system
  • Fabricated and installed a temporary access system
  • Installed four - 2” supplemental cable strands on each side of the bridge that are 800-ft long
  • Fabricated and installed four saddles at the cable bents
  • Fabricated and installed four tower saddles
  • Fabricated and installed 112 cable clamp assemblies with jacking beams located above each suspender
  • Transferred 50 percent of the existing bridge weight to the supplemental cable system
  • Removed the temporary access system

Unique Challenge

With a project schedule of nine weeks, the Cianbro team worked vigorously seven days a week with rotating crews to complete the load transfer to the supplemental cable system. In what is believed to an engineering first in the world, Cianbro installed the supplemental cables to a bridge that was not originally built with provisions to accept the supplemental cables.
