Thames River Bridge Rehabilitation (Electrical)

Scope of Work

Cianbro was responsible for the electrical rehabilitation of the Thames River Bridge including all power controls, communication, and electric traction.

Project Details

  • Upgraded the electrical system by installing a new 600 amp, 3 phase, 480-volt electric service which feeds two Motor Control Centers
  • Installed an emergency back-up system consisting of a 350 kW diesel generator, 600 amp, and 480-volt auto transfer switch
  • Installed 480-volt transformers, panel boards, and associated equipment
  • Installed over 700 feet of cable tray
  • Installed over 10,000 feet of electrical conduit
  • Installed over 180,000 feet of electrical wire
  • Terminated over 3,000 electrical connections
  • Installed a new lighting system including walkway lights, sheave hood lights, lifting girder lights, channel navigation lights, aviation beacon lights and lift span lighting
  • Work performed during the 4-day rail outage included:
    • Installing span locks, limit switches, and plunger switches
    • Installing 140 feet of 30 multi-conductor flexible cable chase cables and associated supports in 200-foot tall towers
    • Installing medium voltage (25 kV) rail overhead electrification
    • Integrating the Amtrak Signal System
    • Completing over 600 wire terminations

The Construction Manager was URS Corporation (Previously The Washington Group, Inc.).
