Cianbro is one of the Top 50 Employers in the Nation for Workers Over 50

Cianbro is being honored by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) as one of the 2013 Best Employers for Workers Over 50 in the United States.

The construction firm joins a diverse group of health systems, corporations, government agencies, and non-profits on the list, which was announced Monday, June 17th, by AARP and SHRM.

"Cianbro is very proud of this recognition," said Human Resources Vice President Mike Bennett. "To be the only construction company in the country chosen is an honor in itself. Thanks to all of our team members for making our company what it is."

“One way AARP improves opportunities for older workers is by spotlighting employers that have implemented programs to help retain, retrain, engage and recruit mature workers,” said Lori Parham, AARP Maine State Director. “In a state with a large and growing mature workforce, Cianbro Corporation knows that recruiting and retaining workers 50+ is smart business.  Maine businesses that want to maintain long-term competitiveness will embrace a multi-generational workforce, and develop policies and practices to attract, educate and retain an increasingly age-diverse workforce.”

Among the criteria used by AARP and SHRM to select Cianbro as a company with forward-looking policies toward older workers are:

  • Thirty-four percent of Cianbro employees are age 50+. The average tenure of employees age 50+ is 15.5 years.
  • Cianbro uses senior placement agencies to target mature workers and retirees. In addition, the company has an individual who works with the Maine Older Workers Committee to recruit mature employees.
  • Cianbro Corporation’s Healthy Life Style Program helps employees and their families live healthier, more productive lives. The program focuses on reducing health risks to prevent the onset of long-term diseases and identifies controllable at-risk behaviors.
  • Cianbro stays connected with its retirees by communicating on a regular basis, inviting retirees to organization events, and by providing retirees with ongoing access to retirement planning workshops and information.

National Institutes of Health (NIH), one of the world’s premiere medical research institutions, gained top honors in the 2013 search. Scripps Health of Southern California, which headed the list in 2011, is runner-up this year.

Announcement of the top 50 came jointly by AARP and SHRM, which is cosponsoring the Best Employers program for the first time. SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. The winners were honored June 17th at the SHRM annual conference in Chicago.

“Every organization needs to view its older workers as highly valuable assets and develop strategies to keep this enormous wealth of talent,” said SHRM President and CEO Henry G. (Hank) Jackson. “It’s absolutely critical for organizations to embrace new ways to retain older workers, especially in the face of the coming wave of Boomer retirements.”

Any U.S.-based employer with at least 50 employees is eligible to apply for the Best Employers award. Candidates are vetted to ensure that practices meet the needs of mature workers. Key areas of consideration include: recruiting practices; opportunities for training, education and career development; workplace accommodations; alternative work options, such as flexible scheduling, job sharing and phased retirement; employee health and retirement benefits, and retiree work opportunities.
