Connecting Communities through the Ticonic Bridge

After more than 110 years of service, the Ticonic Bridge connecting Waterville and Winslow, Maine, is being replaced due to structural deterioration. The new bridge is designed to last a century, with 6-foot sidewalks, 5-foot shoulders, crash-resistant rails, architectural lighting, and corrosion-resistant materials.

The original steel truss bridge was built in the 1800s, and a concrete deck arch bridge followed. Damage during the 1936 flood led to repairs and widening. In 1970, Cianbro participated in another widening project. Over 50 years later, the Maine DOT decided full replacement was necessary.

The project is in two stages: Stage one includes demolition of the 1970 deck and reconstruction of the upstream half. Stage two involves demolition of the 1911 arch and 1936 deck, then building the downstream half.

The team used overhead gantry cranes and a custom truss system to dismantle the old bridge efficiently. By the end of 2024, phase one was complete, including a new pier, abutments, and deck. Concrete placement totaled about 600 yards.

High-water flows and habitat restrictions required work resequencing. Fluctuating river levels and steep banks further complicated access. Numerous utilities required careful relocation.

In early 2025, the cranes were moved to begin phase two, which includes full closure for demolition and replacement. Completion is on track for spring 2027.

“This project has brought talent from across the company to create a powerhouse team,” said Cliff Albert, assistant superintendent.
