Cianbro’s team of construction professionals at the company’s facility at Ricker’s Wharf in Portland has been diligently working on the 5,000-ton concrete entrance structure for the Superflood Basin Project for the past year and a half. On Sunday, June 20, the team watched with pride as the barge carrying the structure and accompanying tugboats headed seaward down the Fore River and into Casco Bay, destined for its new home at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

For the past several years, Portland, Maine has enjoyed a vigorous economic recovery as the city buzzes with construction activity spurred by low interest rates, tax credits, and sustained consumer demand. Cianbro continued to play an integral part of that recovery in 2020, with two major projects in the booming waterfront district: 100 Fore Street and the Canopy Hotel.

As we entered 2020, we were laser-focused on fulfilling our five-year strategic business plan. Before quarter one ended, our focus was stretched to include an unexpected and unknown virus rapidly spreading across the US. As the country’s economy closed down and government-ordered restrictions were put in place, we were all faced with many new challenges brought on by the pandemic. Fortunately, the construction industry was deemed essential. As we look back, it was inspiring to see how our team members and clients adapted to all the changes around us and worked together to allow our work to carry on.

The Associated Builders and Contractors recently awarded Cianbro and Starcon with National Safety Pinnacle Awards at the 31st annual Excellence in Construction Awards during the ABC Convention 2021 in Grapevine, Texas.
