Bridge #7 over Alligator River

Scope of Work
The scope of work included replacement of machinery and the electrical control system on a 300-foot long swing span over the Alligator River, all while keeping the bridge in operation. Replacement of machinery included installation of a hydraulic temporary operating system to operate the span during machinery replacement. Control House renovation and replacement of a 1.25-mile aerial cable feeding bridge were also included in the job.
Project Details
  • Complete replacement of operational machinery, including end wedge, center wedge, and turning machinery with rack and pinion
  • Inspection and cleaning of the pivot bearing under swing span
  • Jacking bridge and shimming to road grades at ends to obtain better operating clearance
  • Installation of new PLC bridge control system with replacement of all conduit and wire
  • Replacement of 2400-volt aerial cable on 1.25-mile approach spans and new transformer at the Control House
  • Replacement of doors, windows, HVAC, and roof of Control House, as well as tiles and painting
  • Replacement of access ladders, stairs, handrails and platform under the Control House
Lean, Innovative and Unique Project Solutions
Challenges included using a temporary hydraulic operating system with PLC control installed on the span during the week long outage which was used to operate the span during the six-week machinery replacement. Access was difficult on the two-mile wide river and two lane bridge. Cianbro crews had a short schedule with only one week for road and channel outages.
