Boiler Tube Replacement

Scope of Work
Cianbro acted as the mechanical contractor for the replacement of 258 boiler tubes in Huber's Nebraska A-type boiler. The project required removal and replacement of the existing boiler skin, installation of new insulation, demolition of the existing boiler tubes, cleaning and re-installation of 244 bent-type water wall generating and fire tubes, along with 14 target wall tubes. In addition, Cianbro also had to restore and analyze existing refractories throughout the boiler.
Project Details
  • Demolished approximately 310 square feet of boiler skin
  • Removed existing boiler insulation
  • Demolished existing fire seal refractory
  • Removed and reinstalled steam drum internals
  • Demolished 258 generating and fire wall boiler tubes
  • Washed out stubs, cleaned, and Micrometered 516 holes associated with the steam and mud drum
  • Installed (soft roll) 258 new generating and a fire wall boiler tubes
  • Hard rolled / final Micrometer of 258 new generating and fire wall boiler tubes
Lean, Innovative and Unique Project Solutions
The biggest challenge to the project was the size of the steam and mud drum associated with Huber's Nebraska Boiler. The steam drum had a working space of 42 inches, whereas the mud drum only had 22 inches of working space, making it challenging to the project team. The project team reached a milestone when the boiler was hydro-tested to verify "tube-tightness", and only one leak was found out of 516 holes.
