Bay Bridge 5kV Electrical Improvements

Scope of Work

Cianbro was responsible for the supply, installation, commissioning, cutover, and warranty on a new resilient remotely monitored and controlled 5kV feeder system. This project involved the installation of cable, related equipment, a SCADA system, and new support structures. The project also entailed the removal and disposal of the existing cable and switchgear, as well as modifications to the utility feeds from Baltimore Gas and Electric and Delmarva Power, including the replacement of power transformers on both the East and West ends of the bridge.

  • Installed new structural steel supports for a 5kV, 480V cable
  • Installed 23 new platforms for electrical equipment
  • Performed directional boring (East and West abutments)
  • Installed concrete pads with electrical equipment
  • Installed a prefabricated precast building
  • Installed a new 5kV and 480V cable on the south Bridge
  • Installed a new 5kV cable on the North Bridge
  • Installed electrical equipment
  • Demolished existing 5kV cable and equipment
  • Installed new integrated supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system
Lean, Innovative and Unique Project Solutions
Cianbro utilized the Last Planner System for Lean construction scheduling. Additionally, suspended scaffolding was utilized to provide access to work areas when egress via roadway and water is restricted and/or limited due to weather and other circumstances.
