Starcon Jobsites in Illinois Earn ABC Platinum STEP Award

Seven Starcon jobsites in Illinois have been honored by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) for outstanding safety achievements in 2012.  ABC has presented a Platinum Level STEP (Safety Training and Evaluation Process) Award to the 250 team members of Starcon jobsites at LyondellBasell in Morris, Illinois; Ingredion Incorporated in Bedford Park; LyondellBasell in Tuscola; Citgo in Lemont; Stepan Company in Channahon; Exxon in Joliet; and Flint Hill Resources in Channahon. The STEP Award was established by ABC in 1989 as a safety program developed by contractors, for contractors.

Criteria include:  An incidence rate at least 25 percent below the national Bureau of Labor Standards average for applicant’s North American Industry Classification System code in the application year; No fatality or catastrophic accident within current application year or the previous two consecutive years which resulted in OSHA citation; No willful or repeat OSHA citations (federal or state) within current application year or the preview two consecutive years; Site supervisory personnel have completed OSHA 10-hour construction safety course or equivalent; Have designated safety personnel with OSHA 30-hour construction safety course training or equivalent -- These individuals, through training and experience, are able to recognize workplace hazards and have the authority to take prompt, corrective action; Site-specific safety and health programs in place; Employees actively involved in safety and health programs (i.e., participation in self-audits, site inspections, job hazard analyses, safety and health program reviews, safety training, near-miss investigations, etc.); and employees trained in identification and control of hazards specific to the contractor's worksite(s).

"It is no surprise that Starcon has received this important safety award," said Northern Region Human Resources Manager Tom Wanamaker.  "Each year, our safety results are better than the previous year, and we are already a safety leader in our field.  Still, we are working hard to achieve our Beyond Zero philosophy of not only sending employees home in the same good condition that they arrive at work, but sending them home in better condition.  It was an honor to accept the award on behalf of all the team members that made the achievement possible."

Starcon Northern Region Vice President Reggie Williams is offering congratulations to the team for their safety efforts.  "Receiving the ABC STEP Platinum Award from the Illinois Chapter is very prestigious," Reggie said.  "It is a testimony to the commitment our team members have made to our Beyond Zero journey. We can only achieve this as a TEAM! We have clearly demonstrated we have the ability, talent and participation to go further than we have imagined. I look forward to working with the entire TEAM down this path."

On a side note, Reggie extended special thanks to Ta’Mara Foster for submitting the necessary applications to the ABC to receive this award.
